Episode 26 – This is how we do it
Welcome to episode 26 – This is how we do it. Intro music is “Black Flag” by the Silly Snails.
In this episode we talk about:
- Google Wave and how it help us set up characters and RP potential in our upcoming game
- How we want more RP and how some systems depend on it
- D20 Modern and why it failed for us or how we failed it
- Group size and what we think of ours
- Microsoft Surface table
- How maptools leads us to distraction
This podcast is much more of a trainwreck then we were all planning, hopefully it’ll still be enjoyable. If anything, at least we have a real omnidirectional microphone for our group now.
This episode runs about 42 minutes. Please send emails to podcast@runningdtw.com with questions or suggestions.

Wow, my first thought was “Jason left in the ‘Figure out a topic’ part of the night” But it just kept on going. All in all it was good, yeah a train wreck but good discussion. I for see topics coming out of this in a more structured format.

Eight is too goddamn many. It sounds like you guys have PLENTY of players, some of which aren’t even in any games right now. Split that shit up! I’d recommend 5 players in one and 4 players in another. The 5 players do D&D or M&M or something traditional, and the 4 players do Mouse Guard or Burning Wheel or something. Maybe Dogs? Play short-ish campaigns, 4-6 months at a time maybe, and switch it around after each campaign to keep things fresh.
EIGHT IS TOO MANY!
Also, I think you’re (whoever said it, you bastards didn’t introduce yourselves) right about challenge in 4E. For us, the first fight, sometimes even the second fight, wasn’t the fun one. It was the 3rd, 4th, and 5th fight, when Dailies had been used and healing surges were getting low, THATS when things got interesting. And that’s how the game’s designed to be played. They deliberately set it up so that it’s not “ok, we’ve moved 1 room, lets rest for 8 hours now” anymore. We really enjoyed seeing how far we could push things between rests, how thing our resources could be stretched.
Wanna see if your character is a badass? So what if he kills some dudes when he’s fresh. Survive a boss fight after 5 fights before that. THEN you’re a badass.
Kevin
P.S. EIGHT IS TOO MANY.
